We all classmates worked for 3 weeks as a company. There were three teams of five members; and each member had a specialization: Space and Experience Designer, Human Factors Designer, Design Communicator and Coordinator, Visual Interface Designer, and Hardware Designer. All members of each team collaborated in the whole design process as a group; and the members of different teams with same specialization collaborated in the research phase of the process.
My role was Human Factors Designer: user studies, concept testing, usage continuity, scenario development and service design.
For the pre study we did several interviews to both students and teachers about tutoring sessions. We found 3 major concerns: the importance of feeling the presence of each other; the importance of show and see the work no matter the media to make sure there is an understanding throughout the communication process; and the importance of giving and getting feedback without technical problems or interruptions.
We also performed one tutoring simulation on Skype. From there we found problems that can go from sound and image quality, to difficulty to point at something, to light and reflections...
Research to get an idea of expression and experience of the users reactions to a service, and create references where possible solutions could be placed.
The sketches at the top left represents the ideal communication model in a personal tutoring session based on any design project located in the middle of the ideation process. The material that the student shows to the teacher to get feedback includes digital presentation, sketches, sketch models, a digital 3D model, a Photoshop rendering and a clay model.
Research to understand where communication can take place and the problems that may appear in each one.
The chart shows different case scenarios depending on if there are shared / separated spaces, the connection between parties and the clarity of communication; to understand which are the best and worst cases in which communication can take place.
Ideation process included several brainstorming sessions, concept testing within the team members with roleplay; and user test sessions.
Also a physical model was designed.
Students at school can use it along with their personal computer in a private space. Teachers at remote place only need their personal computer and internet access.
