Magnic is a construction & symbolic toy that uses texture to differentiate elements and magnetism for the interaction between the parts, all in a farm & countryside theme.
It is designed to be played by children, with and without visual impairment, with ages between 3 and 5 years old.
Research for this project was based on two parts.
For the first one there was observation and interviews at a kinder garden schools and at ONCE school.
For the second one some areas, shown in the graphic, were studied in depth. This areas included the study and understanding of children in preschool age, blindness in kids, types of games and toys, ways of enhance sensory perception and regulations regarding toys; as well as technologies and materials (intelligent materials as specified in the brief).
Symbolic game was the most suitable, and there we decided to use the farm as a theme because it includes a different environment based on nature, some characters with visible different shapes and sounds that can be played, even with the mouth, and different role plays.
Combining it with a construction game allows the children to build different games every time they use it, aside from the several skills a child can develop whit this kind of games.
So then we studied shapes, colours, animals, activities,... of a western farm.
Sketches for the final concept.
This is my thesis project, and has been developed mainly focusing on the end user, but having also technical and economic conditions; under the tutelage of Magnic Toys and ONCE (Spanish National Organization for the Blind).
